How I Booked a $20,026 JAL First Class Flight for 80,000 Miles

Why This Redemption Stood Out
JAL First Class had been a bucket-list flight for me, and this was also my first-ever experience flying international first class.
The cash price for the itinerary was approximately $20,026, which is not something I would have paid out of pocket. When I found award availability through American Airlines AAdvantage for 80,000 miles plus $11.20 in taxes and fees, it turned an experience that had always felt aspirational into something I could actually book.
How I Booked It
I booked the itinerary through American Airlines AAdvantage for 80,000 miles plus $11.20 in taxes and fees.
The routing was New York to Chicago on American Airlines, followed by Chicago to Tokyo in Japan Airlines First Class.
This is a good example of why understanding airline partnerships matters. You do not necessarily need to book directly through the airline operating the flight in order to access an award seat.
Why Points Made Sense
The same itinerary was selling for approximately $20,026 in cash.
Using 80,000 AAdvantage miles instead worked out to roughly 25 cents of value per mile based on the retail fare.
But the more important point is that I was never going to spend $20,000 on one flight.
The real value was that points made a bucket-list experience attainable.
That's exactly how I think about award travel at PassportToLiv. A great redemption isn't just about getting the highest possible cents-per-point number. It's about using points strategically to unlock an experience you genuinely value.
The Takeaway
Points and miles can turn travel that feels completely out of reach into something possible.
That doesn't mean points are always the right answer. Sometimes cash is a better deal. In this case, the difference between the cash fare and the award cost made using miles an easy decision.
Have points but aren't sure how to use them?
PassportToLiv can compare your points, cash options, and available programs to help find the smartest way to book your trip.
Plan My TripCash prices are comparisons captured at the time of search or booking. Award availability, program pricing, taxes and fees can change and are never guaranteed. Airline and loyalty-program names identify the relevant products and do not imply sponsorship or affiliation.
